CATSCRATCHBOX.COM HOW TO REFILL YOUR CATSCRATCHBOX 1. Set the catscratchbox down on its side on a soft cloth with the first dowel hanging over the edge of your work surface so that it can be tapped down and out. Using a hammer and one of the dowels from inside the REFILL, gently tap the two dowels out. The dowels are lightly glued in with the same varnish that finishes the box and will break free fairly easily. Save these original dowels to use again and not the shorter dowels that are in the new filler. Remove all the old filler.
2. Varnishing sometimes causes some of the cardboard to adhere to the inside of the wood frame. Scrape off any of the old filler that is stuck to the sides.
3. If you have any pieces of wood 3/4" thick (standard 1X), you can put them inside the frame as shown. This will line up the holes in the new filler with the holes in the side of the catscratchbox through which you will have to insert the original dowels. No wood? No problem. It is easy to just line it up by eye.
4. Set aside SiX pieces of the filler. Divide the remainder in two making sure you leave the folded sections attached to one another as much as possible, this makes the filler stronger and last longer. ĘPlace the two large sections of filler inside the frame, leave a space in the CENTER and make sure to keeping the surface of the strips level.
5. Place the first extra piece one third of the way inside the opening, and a second one on the other side. This makes a "V" that sticks up like this:
6. Place the four remaining pieces inside the "V" and press down firmly and evenly on all six, using both hands. The pieces slide down inside with the "V" acting like a funnel. This creates the tight fit that you want and need.
7. Place the box back on its side on the cloth, and making sure the filler is centered in the frame, tap the first dowel through the frame with a hammer. You may have to recenter the cardboard pieces a bit from one side or the other during the process to keep the holes lined up if the dowel feels stuck and stops. Once you get through the filler, the dowel will either slide right into place or you will feel or hear the dowel hitting the inside of the frame on the opposite side. A few hard raps WILL force the dowel into place since very hole on the inside frame is cone-shaped to funnel the dowel into place. Both sides of the dowel should be flush with the outside walls.
Now you are done!
